invasive species

The numbers of carp is exploding–they now account for up to of 90 per cent of live fish mass in some of the Basin’s rivers– the Murray, the Darling, the Murrumbidgee, the Macquarie etc. Carp have invaded 92% of all rivers and wetlands in their present geographic range and cause massive degradation of aquatic plants, riverbanks and riverbeds when they feed. Their feeding style causes turbidity in the water that makes it hard for some native fish to survive.

Though there’s definitely not much space left in the Basin’s rivers for native fish really nothing is being done about removing the carp. They reproduce quickly, lack natural predators and are able to take over ecological niches while the native fish are under stress.

This indicates that we need to taking seriously how human’s instrumental control of nature has damaged environments and animals. and that the gravity and deep-rootedness of the current environmental crisis demands a different way of interacting with nature.
